Just before their inaugural golf tournament, Meriwether County Rotarians will Read Across Meriwether, showing their commitment to literacy.

Sometimes a new Rotary project begins with a complicated plan. Other times, it starts with a couple of Rotarians saying, “Why don’t we do this?”

Earlier this year, Rotarians Lance Daniel and Jodi Sharpe approached Club President Melissa Trujillo with the idea of hosting a golf tournament as a new fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Meriwether County. The goal was simple: create an event that would bring people together for a fun day while raising money to help Rotary continue serving communities throughout Meriwether County.

From that conversation, “Par for a Purpose” was born.

The club’s inaugural golf tournament will be held Friday, September 25, 2026, at Pebble Brook Golf Course in Woodbury. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with tee off at 10:00 a.m.

The tournament will be a 3-Man Scramble, with teams registering for $375 or individual golfers for $125. Lunch is included, and the field is limited to 16 teams.

And, because a golf tournament ought to include a little friendly competition, there will be plenty of it.

The tournament will feature two flights, with $1,200 for first place and $600 for runner-up, with prize payouts based on a full field. Golfers can also compete in a Closest to the Pin competition and purchase a $30 Mulligan & Tee Buster Package, which includes two mulligans and one Tee Buster — an opportunity to take a shot from the ladies’ tee.

A 50/50 raffle will also be held, with proceeds helping support Rotary projects.

But the real purpose of the tournament goes well beyond the scorecard.

The Rotary Club of Meriwether County serves communities throughout the county through projects supporting students and schools, literacy, youth programs, local nonprofits and other community needs. Funds raised through Par for a Purpose will help the club continue saying “yes” when opportunities arise to make a difference close to home.

The club is currently looking for both golfers and sponsors to help make the first tournament a success.

Sponsorship opportunities include Tournament Champion Sponsor – $1,000, Eagle Sponsor – $500, Birdie Sponsor – $250, Hole Sponsor – $150, as well as Par Supporter donations under $150. Depending on the level, sponsors will receive recognition through tournament signage, the event banner, tournament announcements and Rotary’s social media.

For the Rotary Club of Meriwether County, Par for a Purpose is more than a new fundraiser. It is another way for Rotarians, businesses and community members to come together around the thing Rotary does best: Service Above Self — with a little golf thrown in for good measure.
